Congratulations, you just got engaged and now what?   This is an exciting time and –  your life just changed. Now, that you are engaged, it is time to plan.  Here is the first thing to figure out – your budget. It will determine where and when are you will get married.  Eloping? Big wedding or small wedding? On the beach, mountain top, at the rose garden, big venue or small?  What month, season or time of day?  Now once you know what you can afford, have fun with it!  Get creative and remember to get help if you need it.  Ask friends who have just gone through this.  Talk to as some wedding vendors or planners in your area, the people who do this all year long for advice. Next, once you have found a venue and set a date, start looking for your photographer.  We photographers book up well in advance, from 6 months to a year or more before a wedding date.  So start looking at photographer websites and look for style, price, AND last but not least, experience.   Call and speak with the photographer and ask them how long they have been doing this, and other questions that you want answered. Engagement Session on the Storrs Campus, UCONN.

I loved photographing this gorgeous couple’s Engagement Session on the Storrs Campus at UCONN.   The UCONN campus is a park, a botanical garden, full of new and old architecture and a working farm!  So many photographic opportunities here, especially in the spring.  The trees were in full bloom, the grass was finally green and the skies cleared for us that day! Good light can be found anywhere. The trick is finding it with interesting backgrounds.  UCONN’s Storrs campus is great for this as well.  On this day we photographed between 4:30 -6:30 pm.  The light was soft due to some fine clouds which diffused the sun, and the quality of light was warm because the sun was low in the afternoon sky.  This helps to create pleasing skin tones and I can get ‘catch lights’ in the eyes.  Open skies (not too many big trees or buildings to block the light) is important as well.  I had good light reflecting on the faces.  No flash or reflectors were used here, I just found some good open or directional light.  The last photo is back-lit as the sun was very low.  I wanted to create a rim of light on their […]

Wedding Color Trends for 2014!

COLORS! Wedding Trends for this year, 2014 are among my favorites!  This year the popular wedding colors include blues of all kinds, deep purples mixed with warmer tones – from red, orange to pinks.  So far, some of my 2014 brides are incorporating  orange and reds for the fall; shades of green and ivory for spring; and cool blue-violet mixed with whites for summer!  I love those pastels when it is blazing hot! I think color choices set a mood and tone for any event.  If you are a dramatic personality – hot colors may be your thing.  Romantic and understated, pastels and lace may be perfect! I think it actually depends on who you are, what you love and what time of year you decide to get married. What colors have you picked for your wedding day and why did you choose them?  Please share by leaving a comment! Ideas for Your Connecticut Wedding

Congratulations to those couples who are newly engaged and planning your 2014-15 weddings!  I have been meeting with many couples over the last month discussing their ideas about venues and details as they plan their weddings.  Showing my albums and seeing the wheels turn as they look at my photographs,  I decided it would be cool to share these ideas that my own clients created with everyone who drops by my blog as it could be helpful to others. In this post I will concentrate on a favorite of mine – ‘Black and White’ Weddings.  Elegant, clean and appropriate for any time of the year.  Thank you to my wonderful couple, Nicole and Michael for creating a beautiful day. One of my favorite venues for photographing – the grounds of the Hill-Stead Museum in Farmington, CT.   Below you will see we photographed the formal portraits there.  Black & White just pops in that setting and the garden colors were perfect with Mom’s beautiful dress.  Be aware that there are fees and restrictions, but worth every penny, and please know that the fees help keep this very special place in tip top shape – so do your part and plan […]

Amarante’s Seacliff Weddings in Connecticut – 5 reasons I love this place.

I do have the best job in the world.  I love serving my clients and thinking up cool ways to create something really special for each couple on their wedding day.  There are many wedding locations in CT where I love to work.  One of these is Amarante’s Seacliff in New Haven.  Let me tell you a little about why I enjoy this place so much. #1:  Grace and the whole team at Amarante’s treat their clients and vendors like family.  (I am a preferred vendor there so I know!)  They really care about your wedding day.. and they work with you as if you ARE a member of their own family.  This is for real and not something you find anywhere.  Trust me. #2:  The food is awesome.  I love to eat great food and when I photograph weddings I get very hungry so, it is always a pleasure to eat their fine food.   Amarante’s does an awesome job at their Client Tasting events twice a year, too! #3:  The service is wonderful.  I have NEVER I experienced a hold up in the meal coming out or a glitch in the time-line that makes the guests fidgity wondering when […]

Fun CT Engagement Sessions!

This is what I believe: -That every engaged couple wants beautiful images of themselves to mark this special time in their lives, which will enable them to feel comfortable being photographed on their wedding day. -Every person deserves to have beautiful photographs of themselves that reflect who they are now, so that future generations can connect to their family history in years to come. If you feel this way, welcome! My job as a ‘family historian’ begins with weddings.  Yes, I am a wedding photographer in CT who cares about the importance of family history. A fun way to invite wedding clients into my studio is the engagement session.  Engagement sessions are fun and helpful especially if you can do it with your chosen wedding photographer.  I will tell you why- You and your wedding photographer, the person you will be spending a great deal of time with before, on and after your wedding day, will make it their mission to capture you and your partner as you are naturally and find out what your concerns are regarding how you look in photos. Do you suffer from photo trauma?  This kind of session before the wedding day can cure this!  Your […]

Wedding Tips for Interviewing a Photographer.

Hello!  I have been meeting with many brides for the 2014 Wedding Season lately, and I wanted to share some things with you if you are looking for a photographer for your CT wedding.  It is important that your research and interviews go smoothly and that you find the ‘right for you’ vendors for your wedding day. 1) Prioritize what is super important to you first.  Is it the dress or flowers?   The venue or food?  Or is it the photography?  Let’s assume you are making the venue and the photography a major priority and that they are the most important things to find first.  This seems to be the case with a majority of my brides and grooms. (note: most of my brides contract a venue and date first, but I have many brides who CALL ME first and ask me when I am available.  I love that!) So, once you have a date set, I would suggest that you start looking for a professional photographer.  Why professional?  I have spoken to many unhappy couples who did not hire a professional in order to save money and they were very sorry later.  I won’t go in to the many […]

Connecticut Country & City Wedding

I had the honor of photographing the marriage of Candy and Bob this past July – with family and close friends standing by as they joined their lives together.  The ceremony took place in a tiny church in Hebron, CT which is located southeast of Hartford in the beautiful rolling hills and farmlands of this cool little state.  There were big beautiful bouquets of summer flowers; pretty pots with ribbons lining the pews and lovely bouquets and boutonniers.  After the ceremony & photos in the garden, we proceeded to downtown Hartford  for the party at the fantastic restaurant ‘Firebox‘ that specializes in ‘Farm to Table’ foods.  (A must visit if you have not already experienced this place.) It was a fine mix of sophistication and down to earth rustic which made a unique, fun and beautiful wedding day.  Congratulations to this beautiful couple! Take a peek at what the day was like and please leave your comments below!  Thank you for visiting my blog. Dress from Mariella’s in Rocky Hill, CT/Food & Flowers by FireBox, Hartford, CT

Tips for Great Wedding Photos – Part 3

How can you be sure YOU will have a great time at your wedding reception?  The best way is to hire a good team.  A good party takes experience and skill to pull off.  A venue with experienced managers and a great band or DJ is key.  As a photographer, I work closely that day with the reception manager and/or DJ.  Make sure who you choose is experienced at weddings, as there is much going on.   This person is in charge of the timing of the entrances, dances and events of all kinds during the reception.  Your DJ or band leader must know how to throw a great party!  I have witnessed countless receptions where the DJ or bandleader takes charge of the room and creates a great time.  One person I have loved working with is Matty B who is a one man live band and DJ.  He is an exceptional wedding pro and throws a great party, plays sax, guitar and sings beautifully, as well.  He can suggest what songs to play that will make your party rock, will play your music, and knows how to handle all the events of the day.  Plus he works with […]
