Seeing Value in Professional Family Portraits

Seeing value in professional family portraits is something I think everyone realizes, but can’t aways make time for.  I have fully documented my family in photographs since our children were born.  There have been times that I’ve thought twice about investing the time and energy into this ritual.  We all feel too busy, a little camera shy or perhaps we have had unhappy experiences being photographed at one time or another.  I hear these stories from my clients.  Creating family portraits for my clients is one of my passions and a very rewarding part of my work. Seeing Value in Professional Family Portraits On Your Walls. Professionals know how to photograph all kinds of body types and we study the best way to compliment everyone.  We understand light and composition and how to handle kids who just want to have fun and not stand still, or who don’t want to smile right now.  My clients come to me because they see the value and the difference between the photos I can create for them and snapshots they make themselves.  They hang them on their walls so they can get the most enjoyment out of them. My goals as a professional photographer: To create a family portrait or a series of portraits that show who my clients are as a family. Show […]

Fall Portrait Sessions – Booking Now.

Fall Portrait Sessions are a favorite of mine.  Autumn seems to be arriving early this year so I would like to encourage you to get a jump on scheduling a portrait session time for yourself, significant other, family, pets, or all of the above!  The days are warm and the evenings cool – perfect weather for portraits here in Connecticut! There are limited weekend days so hurry and call me if that is your only time to schedule your Fall Portrait Sessions, or I am available on weekday afternoons after school or work as well. Things to think about: 1-Portraits make create holiday gifts for family.  Why not get a jump of the holiday shopping?  Portrait gifts make it easy to create a personal gift that can be shared with many family members.  Family portraits are priceless, especially to parents and grandparents.  Whether they are far away or living close by, grandparents love having your beautiful faces and smiles on their wall or mantle all year round.   2- Children grow up fast. (Although I realize, sometimes it feels really slow) Time flies and before you know it you may realize that you do not have a professional quality family portrait that is up to date.  Right NOW is a great time to […]

Maternity Photography Session

Maternity Photography I love it when my wedding clients call and ask about Maternity Photography.  I treat these sessions like a regular portrait session, except that I am more inclined to summon up some “fashion designer wanna be skills” to create something special like in this image below.   I created this dress on the spot by wrapping my subject in material I keep around to create a dreamy dress for her.  Meet Petra, one of my former wedding clients. Petra and husband Derrick are expecting in a couple of weeks!  Isn’t Petra a beautiful mother to be?  I could not wait to share it with you.  Please feel free to leave your comments here, I would love to know what you think, too.

Perseverance – or why you should not give up on yourself.

Perseverance. Definition: steadfastness in doing something despite difficulty or delay in achieving success. It pays to practice perseverance and never give up on yourself.  I learned that last week.  The Connecticut Professional Photographers Association, which I am a member of, is an association of professional photographers who support each other in moving forward in skill and business.  Print competition plays a large roll in this and I have entered many times, but have never received any awards.  It is difficult, as each print is judged to the highest standards, plus, judged by other Master Photographers.  With enough award winning prints, a pro photographer can work toward and achieve Master Photographer status.  I gave up this summer on any chance that I could win any awards as I never placed in competition and the judges always found something ‘wrong’ with my work.  I just gave up.  I decided I would just stop worrying about obtaining Master Photographer.  Really.  I decided that I would not put any more attention on it and I would just shoot my best for my clients and stop stressing over this.  And a funny thing happened.  I started to have fun and ‘play’ behind the camera.  Imagine […]

High School Senior Photography that makes YOU look great!

I am excited about photographing many High School Seniors this summer.  So I am writing about High School Senior Photography that makes you look great.  The way I help you do this is by taking the focus off yourself.  Follow?  When your attention is off yourself, and you are having fun, you will look great!  We will talk, chat, laugh and focus on having fun with poses in the studio… and if you choose an on location session, we go to a special places you love and that have meaning for you!  I create a fun experience so that we can create photos that you look great in! Preparation is important, too.  Both of us have to prepare. I will meet you prior to your session in order to find out what makes you special and unique at this point in your life and learn about your interests and accomplishments.  Then we make a plan and pick a session that is appropriate for you.  I want to personalize the senior portrait experience for you. You just have to decide on and bring your favorite outfits and props that mean something to you to your session.  You know, things that represent […]

Hiring a Professional Photographer.

Hiring a professional photographer for your head shot is one of the best things you can do for your business. Just about everyone has a camera these days, and many people are taking their own photos.  That is great, but when it comes to  business portraits it should look professional.  Consider hiring a professional photographer.  Take a look on LinkedIn or Facebook, there is a range of quality, and some people don’t even have an image.  Why?  Probably because they don’t have one they love.  Do you? We all want to look our best and have a record of ourselves that shows who we really are.  This is not to say that candid images are not showing that… there is plenty of energy in those images as they capture us in moments and experiences that we treasure and want to remember.   Those are great for a personal FB page.  For a professional look, it needs to be a professional photograph. Example: Look at this UCONN Business Student above – we did a session last week because she is looking forward to finding work and is about to begin marketing herself when she graduates. She understands the value of […]

Portraits in Black and White

Why Portraits in Black and White as opposed to color? I have a soft spot for portraits in black and white.  If I want to have full control of where my viewers eyes go in a photograph – black and white takes away the distraction of color.  Black and white can can highlight only what you want the viewer to see through line, form, light and shadow.  I don’t shoot with film anymore but I do miss the experience of creating imagery in a dark room.  Seeing the image emerge in a tray of developer was nothing less than thrilling!  Last weekend I had the wonderful opportunity to mimic a ‘film look’ by photographing the band Autolatry, a heavy metal band that I have known for a long time.  They are relaunching themselves and needed some photos for their marketing.  Actually, I must confess –  the reason I know them is because 2 of them are my sons!  They have had 2 tours of the USA and have made three records.  If you like heavy music, check them out! David and Matt are my sons, they have been playing music together since middle school.  Dave plays lead guitar, writes the […]

Waiting out the Rain_Engagement Session in CT

My challenge this summer has been the weather.  The rains have come heavy and hard and it has made me stretch in many ways.  When it is pouring, photographing outdoors is impossible – so you have to make it work somehow.  My engagement session with Lily and Joe turned out great, but on my drive to their home I was not sure what I would do.  The sky was clear and sunny when I left my studio.  The forecast called for scattered thunder showers but I was optimistic.  Five minutes away from their home I saw a sight that made my heart sink.   The highway was up high so I could see the hills ahead where Lily and Joe’s neighborhood was.  A huge black cloud was hanging low and letting loose with a downpour…. it was actually quite beautiful… but I feared it was where I was headed.  I was right.  It was pouring right over their neighborhood!  We ended up sitting and chatting for awhile, which was fun.  Then we took a few images in the house, and this first one is my favorite.  They had a pretty living room window, so I silhouetted them together in front of […]

Engagement Session at Chamard Vineyards & Hammonasset

I spent a lovely evening with Rachel and Mario at Chamard Vineyards in Clinton, CT.  It was a great break from the rain and the heat as the cool breezes at the shore were glorious.  Mario works there so I had a grand tour of the whole place – including the wine cellar!  Check it out if you have not… the smells from the kitchen were yummy and they grow their own herbs and veggies, too.  After the Chamard ‘experience’ we went down to the beach at Hammonasset for the sunset.   It was a great time and I cannot wait to photograph their wedding in August at the Guilford Yacht Club.   I hope you enjoy these photos!
