Giving thanks for “down time”.

Everyone needs a break and I am so grateful for holidays.  The fall has been hectic and fun, work has been really exciting.. but it takes a toll on this CT Wedding photographer!  By this time of year I am ready for a break! As I celebrated Thanksgiving with my amazing family, I came to appreciate what ‘down time’ means to me.  If we keep pushing the limits and become focused on the job constantly, there is no time for perspective shifts, or the time for resting the mind from its busy work.  Cooking for others and engaging in another creative process can free the mind, relax it and allow new ideas to flow in. I cooked like crazy…which was really fun because I only cook like this once a year!  A turkey AND a ham.. lots of accompaniments and desserts; visited with my family; spoke on the phone with far away relatives and friends, shared experiences and stories, reminisced and laughed a lot!  It was a refreshing break from my usual routine – AND I had a great time. Then earlier today, when I sat down to go over some layouts and designs for client albums that I had […]

A Poem for You on Valentine’s Day

The White Rose by John Boyle O’Reilly   The red rose whispers of passion, And the white rose breathes of love; O, the red rose is a falcon, And the white rose is a dove.   But I send you a cream-white rosebud With a flush on its petal tips; For the love that is purest and sweetest Has a kiss of desire on the lips. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________ Traditionally the white rose is a symbol of innocence and purity.  That is why it is often used in wedding bouquets to symbolize these traits in the bride.

Something to Lift Our Spirits.

It has been a tough week.   It has been hard to focus on anything other than the terrible tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary.   So I decided to live in this moment and find some wonderful things in life that are happening right now.  The first – these lost children and their teachers are inspiring us as a nation to change.  Second, there are thousands of people on FB and twitter right now talking about their 26 random acts of kindness to strangers this week in honor of all those lost.  Spreading kindness and compassion is healing and uplifting.  Also, taking action, no matter how small, makes us feel like we can make a difference. I will be joining this action of random acts of kindness.  How about you? Click here to find out more about it. Thank you to Ann Curry for starting this. And thank you for reading my blog.

‘Local First Mansfield’ 12-4pm on Dec 9, 2012

I am announcing an opportunity for you to give a gift of photography for someone special this year.  I will be participating in an event in Mansfield called, ‘Local First Mansfield‘, on Dec 9th from 12-4 pm at the Mansfield Community Center.  Buy local!  I will have gift certificates for portrait photography, which is a great value for giving at the holidays.  Also, an unusual thing for me, I will have photographic prints of some of my favorite images, landscapes, skyscapes, and some scenes from my travels for sale, starting at $25 and up.  I have not in recent years offered any prints for sale, so please do stop by and see what I have been up to besides photographing brides & grooms,  high school seniors and families!   This is something that I may not do again for awhile so don’t miss it.  Other businesses in attendance will feature services such as:  massage, specialty candies, handcrafted jewelry and more.  Please take the time to stop by and check it out.. who knows, you may be able to finish up your shopping for the holidays. Here are the images that I will be offering or taking custom size orders […]

The Necessary Headshot

Recently I photographed Kristin Schwab,  Associate Professor of Landscape Architecture at the University of Connecticut in Storrs.   My approach to headshots is to photograph each individual in an authentic way while highlighting their best features.  The eyes are especially important in order to connect them to their viewers as you see below.  That is why I find this image compelling –  you can see who she is! In this visual world we live in, the headshot has become very important.  Are you putting your best face forward?  If you would like to, give me a call today!

Inspiration.

When I put myself in the company of incredibly creative people, inspiration seems to be contagious. Have you had this experience? It really does matter who you hang around with. I just came back from my professional convention and spent 4 days in the company of many wonderfully talented people. The most important part, whether you are a photographer or other professional, is that it doesn’t matter what business or area of expertise you are in. I believe we are all creative in some way in our work and our lives. We all need inspiration and we can create it with our “team”. It could be co-workers, or others! The connections made by sharing, collaborating and brainstorming can be quite profound. A marvelous photographer, Matthew Jordan Smith, gave a presentation at the convention and said something like, “You never know where inspiration will come from”.  So true! Where will YOU find new inspiration? Stay open and  look out for a new perspective or idea by connecting with the people around you – and let me know what happens by commenting here! My inspiration lead me to ‘play’.  This effect was captured in low directional light and I experimented with camera […]

A Professional Head Shot – so valuable for your business!

Eric Horton came to me recently and updated his head shot for his business website.  Having a professional head shot on your site is a great way to introduce yourself to your potential clients and gives them an easy way to connect with you.   Isn’t that is what we want as business people, to connect?  Plus, the quality of your professional image shows your attention to detail in your work.  We took some shots in both the studio and natural light area.  This gives Erik some choice and flexibility for his particular business needs.  Erik is a health coach, a very warm and caring person that after 30 seconds of being in his presence, I felt I had known him for years!  His business sounds wonderful for anyone, but especially those who are dedicated to a healthy lifestyle.  Check out his website today!  Eric says, “Instead of creating lists of restrictions and good and bad foods, I coach my clients to create a happy, healthy life in a way that is flexible, fun and free of denial and discipline.”  Sounds good to me!  Thank you, Erik, for trusting me with your head shots.  It was a fun time, too!

CT Wedding Moments: When the photographer is invisible.

I have been meeting with many engaged couples lately and I noticed that most of them are concerned about how the photographer(s) work at capturing natural images.  My clients want images where the subjects are not distracted from the action by a photographer who keeps telling them to smile, or pose etc.  So I thought I would post just a few that show what happens when I make myself invisible.  There are many more.. but this gives an idea of how I work and some moments that are captured while the subjects are unaware. The first one here is the couple enjoying the walk back from out portrait session after the ceremony.  I walked a head and waited until they were engrossed in conversation.  They didn’t know I was still photographing them.   Here is Dad, sitting on the bed looking up at his beautiful daughter as her mother arranged her veil.  I could not have caught that expression if I made myself visible.  I like to ‘shoot through’ as well.   This mother and daughter was a grab shot as I walked through the cocktail hour.  There was a nice connection between them that attracted my eye.   And […]

Vendor Spotlight – Matty B Entertainment

Matt Bernier, or Matty B is one of the best entertainers and DJ’s that I have worked with over the years.  If you  have an event, party or wedding coming up, you must check him out!  He is a fantastic performer on many instruments, a singer and will run an amazing party for you.  Check out his website and give him a call!  I can’t wait to work with him again. Here is a photo of him from a wedding we worked together this summer.  Here he is performing music during the dinner hour which was just right to set the mood.
