CT Engagement Session at Belltown Hill Orchards.

I had the honor of photographing Erin and Robert’s CT Engagement Session at Belltown Hill Orchards in Glastonbury last weekend.  Since this beautiful couple lives right in the Orchard neighborhood,  they arranged permission with the Orchard owners for us to photograph where no other people were.  Plus, we were able to stay after the picking hours for the golden evening light and had the whole orchard to ourselves.  How special is that?!? If you follow my blog, you may know how much I love photographing CT Engagement Sessions.  Not only do we have beautiful landscapes in every corner of the state, but there is so much variety such as:  farm country, cities, small quaint towns, beaches, and hilly trails and woods. Here are the  4 most important reasons why I love photographing CT Engagement Sessions: 1) Besides the fact that I have been a lifelong resident of this beautiful little state and I know many cool areas and beautiful spots for a CT Engagement Session, this is an important time for my couples and I to get to know each other better.  I learn a lot about them from their session.  For instance, I can see how self-conscious (or not) […]

Fun Summer Portrait Photography

Looking for some fun summer portrait photography in CT?  You have come to the right place.  This time of summer, when the days are long and the kids are out of school, is the perfect time to schedule a portrait session.  Think of fun summer portraits as a family activity because it takes some thought and planning in which you can involve the whole family, and it is fun for the kids in my studio because they will feel like stars!  Plus parents have awesome images of the kids.  Before each session I sit down with you and we make a plan.  I find out what you are looking for in your portraits and I can visualize what would look great for your particular family.  I like to custom design my sessions for each client, however you may also choose from some of the other ‘looks’ I have already created as well. Studio Choose from either a cool studio setting where I shot this portrait below.  I have some fun hats and a variety of backgrounds that can be used to create the perfect look for you. Outdoors Or we can go outdoors in the early morning or evening when […]

Sneak Peek – Wright’s Mill Farm Wedding.

Here is a sneak peak of last weekends wedding which took place at the historic and beautiful Wright’s Mill Farm in Canterbury, CT.  It is located in the northeast corner of the state.  A rural area with covered bridge, a pond and old barns.  I wonderful place for a June wedding and for couples who make the photography a priority.  This wonderful couple, Ashley and Jeremy, created a beautiful wedding ceremony and reception here at Wright’s Mill Farm.  Take a look and stay tuned for more images to come.  Congratulations to Ashley and Jeremy on marriage.

Engagement Session on the Storrs Campus, UCONN.

I loved photographing this gorgeous couple’s Engagement Session on the Storrs Campus at UCONN.   The UCONN campus is a park, a botanical garden, full of new and old architecture and a working farm!  So many photographic opportunities here, especially in the spring.  The trees were in full bloom, the grass was finally green and the skies cleared for us that day! Good light can be found anywhere. The trick is finding it with interesting backgrounds.  UCONN’s Storrs campus is great for this as well.  On this day we photographed between 4:30 -6:30 pm.  The light was soft due to some fine clouds which diffused the sun, and the quality of light was warm because the sun was low in the afternoon sky.  This helps to create pleasing skin tones and I can get ‘catch lights’ in the eyes.  Open skies (not too many big trees or buildings to block the light) is important as well.  I had good light reflecting on the faces.  No flash or reflectors were used here, I just found some good open or directional light.  The last photo is back-lit as the sun was very low.  I wanted to create a rim of light on their […]

Portraits in Black and White

Why Portraits in Black and White as opposed to color? I have a soft spot for portraits in black and white.  If I want to have full control of where my viewers eyes go in a photograph – black and white takes away the distraction of color.  Black and white can can highlight only what you want the viewer to see through line, form, light and shadow.  I don’t shoot with film anymore but I do miss the experience of creating imagery in a dark room.  Seeing the image emerge in a tray of developer was nothing less than thrilling!  Last weekend I had the wonderful opportunity to mimic a ‘film look’ by photographing the band Autolatry, a heavy metal band that I have known for a long time.  They are relaunching themselves and needed some photos for their marketing.  Actually, I must confess –  the reason I know them is because 2 of them are my sons!  They have had 2 tours of the USA and have made three records.  If you like heavy music, check them out! David and Matt are my sons, they have been playing music together since middle school.  Dave plays lead guitar, writes the […]

June Wedding in Connecticut!

I am very excited about Ashley and Jeremy’s June wedding in Connecticut!  It is taking place at Wrights Mill Farm in Canterbury, CT.  It is a lovely place with many beautiful rustic features you would expect of a wedding in the country.  A waterfall, winding roads and some cool historic buildings.  There is even a horse and buggy which is supplied with your wedding package!  To me, this kind of wedding setting is a dream.  If you are planning a wedding in Connecticut, especially a June Wedding, and rustic settings are your thing – I would encourage you to check this place out.  I will keep you in the loop after the wedding and share the photos right here on the blog. In the mean time, here is a quick portrait from last weekend when Ashley and Jeremy met with me briefly to go over the details.  These guys are two very cool people, and they have been pretty busy!  Not only busy planning their June wedding, but traveling overseas because of their jobs.   We did make time to photograph them by my new outdoor walkway – with a split rail fence and rustic woods.  Perfect for this couple! Thank […]

Dog Portraiture at Kim Bova Photography!

My Dog Day mini-session day was a blast!  It was fun and challenging.  My goal for dog photography is not that much different then when I am photographing humans.   I want to capture each dog’s personality in a photograph that their ‘people’ will love, even after their ‘best friend’ is gone. Dog Portraiture is a patience building exercise.  Never move too fast, don’t overwhelm the dog with too much action, treats or noises.  I learned that I can make some really high pitch sounds that perhaps only dogs hear.  For some dogs, boredom can set in fast, so I had to grab attention with surprising sounds to keep them engaged.  With patience, I was able to get some nice portraits of these beloved pets for their families to enjoy. Thank you to all the folks who brought their best dog friends to the studio to be photographed for my special DOG DAY and to support the local animal shelter.  And shout out to Stephanie, my assistant, who helped me lure, engage and get some fun photos of these lovely pets.  Here are a few of my favorite images from the day. Meet Jake.  This dog has tons of energy, […]

Rainy Day Weddings.

Rainy day weddings are what every bride cringes at!  Who wants a rainy day wedding?  No one.  But, just because it rains on your wedding day does not mean the worst.  It does happen and I recommend that you embrace it.  You may be surprised by what photographic opportunities may arise due to rain.  As a wedding photographer, I come prepared to stay dry and always put an extra umbrella in with my gear if there is a chance of rain in the forecast.  I love weddings at The Publick House in Sturbridge, MA  and on this day we had it all.  Fog, sun and rain.  However, I captured a photographic moment that was my favorite of the season.  We just finished the formal photos on the great lawn and a pop up storm blew in.  It dumped buckets of rain on us all.  The groom got soaked, the bride was dry and they both were happy as could be!  “Lucky rain!” exclaimed the bride.  She was the only person who remained dry we continued the party indoors. Rain or shine has it’s problems, but try to embrace whatever you have on your day.  Weddings are huge events that are […]

Wedding Color Trends for 2014!

COLORS! Wedding Trends for this year, 2014 are among my favorites!  This year the popular wedding colors include blues of all kinds, deep purples mixed with warmer tones – from red, orange to pinks.  So far, some of my 2014 brides are incorporating  orange and reds for the fall; shades of green and ivory for spring; and cool blue-violet mixed with whites for summer!  I love those pastels when it is blazing hot! I think color choices set a mood and tone for any event.  If you are a dramatic personality – hot colors may be your thing.  Romantic and understated, pastels and lace may be perfect! I think it actually depends on who you are, what you love and what time of year you decide to get married. What colors have you picked for your wedding day and why did you choose them?  Please share by leaving a comment!
