Photographing Pretty Details – That’s why I am a Wedding Photographer!

I love photographing pretty details at a wedding, the rings, shoes, jewelry.  It is part of my job as a wedding photographer to do this and do it well.  My clients put a lot of time and thought into the details.   So on these cold snowy winter days, I find time to practice these things.  This is the wedding photographers time to regroup and plan for the coming season.

Natural Light Senior Portraits – Some Tips

Hi Everyone!  Thanks for checking my blog.  It is January and it is pretty cold out there now.  The last couple of months were great for shooting natural light portraits out of doors.  Now, it is really too cold… but would love to do some more snow portraits if anyone is game!

Pomfret School Chapel Wedding and Ellington Ridge Country Club Reception: Erin and Rob

Today I am happy to share with you this recent Pomfret School Chapel Wedding at the Pomfret School of eastern Connecticut.  Erin and Rob could not have had a more perfect day.  It started out a little foggy but, as Erin’s father exclaimed after the ceremony, “The skies cleared as soon as they kissed!”  The sun was bright and we had a beautiful, dry September day of celebration. Erin and Rob are two very special people.  I met Erin a few years ago at a chamber of commerce meeting.  She took my card then, and now many years later, she called when they decided to marry!  I am thrilled that she did, as they planned a really fun and beautiful wedding and I had a chance to get to know them both a little more.  One of her relatives had a Stanley Steamer car, so she arrived and departed in this cool old fashioned vehicle.  The Pomfret School Chapel is a gorgeous place to be married.  In fact, Erin’s parents were married there, too.  I think that is pretty special.  Erin and Rob included all her nieces and nephews as an integral part of the wedding party which made some […]

Family Portraits and Professional Photographers

Professional Photographers need Family Portraits, too. Professional Photographers personal family portraits often take a backseat to client work.  Besides the fact, that in our home, our sons are grown up and out of the house, I take many photos of other peoples families and sometimes I just don’t think or take the time to photograph my own family portraits. On a walk in the woods yesterday with my husband Peter, on Father’s Day, I brought along my camera with the sole purpose of capturing some beautiful landscape photos or what ever I came upon.  Well, we came to Diana’s Pool, a beautiful spot in Chaplin, CT in the NE woods near where I live and had such a nice time there we had to get a photo of ourselves.  There were plenty of rocks and a waterfall so I found a fairly flat rock to prop the camera on and proceeded to take a few shots with the self-timer.  I was a little nervous about the camera falling, but managed to do it without any disasters!  This photo is a little out of focus but, for me… I love it!  It is RARE to get a portrait of us both […]

Hiring a Professional Photographer.

Hiring a professional photographer for your head shot is one of the best things you can do for your business. Just about everyone has a camera these days, and many people are taking their own photos.  That is great, but when it comes to  business portraits it should look professional.  Consider hiring a professional photographer.  Take a look on LinkedIn or Facebook, there is a range of quality, and some people don’t even have an image.  Why?  Probably because they don’t have one they love.  Do you? We all want to look our best and have a record of ourselves that shows who we really are.  This is not to say that candid images are not showing that… there is plenty of energy in those images as they capture us in moments and experiences that we treasure and want to remember.   Those are great for a personal FB page.  For a professional look, it needs to be a professional photograph. Example: Look at this UCONN Business Student above – we did a session last week because she is looking forward to finding work and is about to begin marketing herself when she graduates. She understands the value of […]

Portraits in Black and White

Why Portraits in Black and White as opposed to color? I have a soft spot for portraits in black and white.  If I want to have full control of where my viewers eyes go in a photograph – black and white takes away the distraction of color.  Black and white can can highlight only what you want the viewer to see through line, form, light and shadow.  I don’t shoot with film anymore but I do miss the experience of creating imagery in a dark room.  Seeing the image emerge in a tray of developer was nothing less than thrilling!  Last weekend I had the wonderful opportunity to mimic a ‘film look’ by photographing the band Autolatry, a heavy metal band that I have known for a long time.  They are relaunching themselves and needed some photos for their marketing.  Actually, I must confess –  the reason I know them is because 2 of them are my sons!  They have had 2 tours of the USA and have made three records.  If you like heavy music, check them out! David and Matt are my sons, they have been playing music together since middle school.  Dave plays lead guitar, writes the […]

Photography for Business Websites

It is important to have good photography for business websites that clearly represents you, your business and what you do for your clients.  Does your business website need spring cleaning?  How about taking a good look at the photography for your business website?  You may find that some fresh new photos of you, your staff, the office or store would help flow new life into the site.   It does not matter if you are a home based business, or a storefront.    I have been commissioned by musicians, Heating and Cooling companies, Electricians and Consultants to update images on their business websites.   I photograph the owners, their employees and their business in action.  Quality photography for business websites is important when you are selling a product or a service.  I am sure you have visited some sites where you landed on the homepage and found the blurry or poor quality images.  First impressions are everything, you can have good photos by hiring a professional. What you put out there matters.  Professional looking websites have great photography on them.  So hire a professional for a couple of hours on a day when your staff is prepped and well dressed, or you […]

Tips for Great Wedding Photos – Part 3

How can you be sure YOU will have a great time at your wedding reception?  The best way is to hire a good team.  A good party takes experience and skill to pull off.  A venue with experienced managers and a great band or DJ is key.  As a photographer, I work closely that day with the reception manager and/or DJ.  Make sure who you choose is experienced at weddings, as there is much going on.   This person is in charge of the timing of the entrances, dances and events of all kinds during the reception.  Your DJ or band leader must know how to throw a great party!  I have witnessed countless receptions where the DJ or bandleader takes charge of the room and creates a great time.  One person I have loved working with is Matty B who is a one man live band and DJ.  He is an exceptional wedding pro and throws a great party, plays sax, guitar and sings beautifully, as well.  He can suggest what songs to play that will make your party rock, will play your music, and knows how to handle all the events of the day.  Plus he works with […]

Happy Spring!

I can’t wait to see the spring green again!  Have a great day.

Winter Break.

Everyone needs a time to get away from their normal activities – to refresh, renew, revisit and learn new stuff.   I attend a wonderful Avatar course (Wizards) that meets in Florida each winter where I can do just that.  It has nothing to do with photography in any direct way.   It is self-study, meditative time, explorative, and you do this with thousands of incredible people from all over the world.  We are “one” for 13 days – it is a life changing experience and an incredibly wonderful time that I am very grateful for.  Now I feel refreshed and ready to get back to work. This is a photograph of the first morning I woke up in Buena Vista, Florida a few weeks ago.  I did not have my pro gear with me, but I did have my trusty little Nikon Coolpix P7000 which is a great little pocket camera.  I walked down to look around the grounds of the condo where I stayed and experienced this wonderful sunrise.  The air temperature was very cool and it interacted with the warm pond water creating a foggy sunrise and beautiful reflection.  I enjoyed many more sunrises from the heated swimming […]
